Southfield Divorce Lawyers Serving the Tri-County Area

At Eklund-Easley & Associates in Southfield, Michigan, our goal in most divorce cases is to try and negotiate a reasonable settlement between the former couple. We do this because it can save our clients the time and money associated with going to trial. In fact, we strongly encourage divorce mediation, or at the very least, ongoing communication between the divorcing spouses, particularly if there are children involved.

Committed to Your Legal Success in Family Law and Divorce Cases

Our lawyers use their extensive knowledge of Michigan law to assist with all divorce related matters, including:

Michigan is not a community property state, but an equitable distribution state. This means that when a couple divorces, a determination must be made as to what constitutes marital property and what constitutes non-marital property. Only marital property is subject to division. After this determination is made, a value will be attached to the marital property by the court and it will be distributed equitably, not equally.

The entire divorce process can prove to be rather complex, and the court system strongly encourages former couples to reach a settlement themselves, as it may prove to be a more accurate reflection of their respective needs. An experienced divorce attorney can help determine whether property is marital or separate, and uncover any hidden assets. For more information, please see our Divorce Practice Center page.

Using Collaborative Principles Without the Risk

At Eklund-Easley & Associates, we stress the importance of working together to create a suitable plan for custody or support. However, if we cannot come to a suitable agreement, we will not hesitate to represent the best interests of our client in court.

Committed to Getting Your Family the Help It Needs

Our firm encourages our clients to seek marital counseling, as well as individual and family counseling prior to any divorce. We believe that, even if you ultimately must get a divorce, counseling can assist you and your spouse in being better able to resolve issues in the future.
